The grass we depend upon

The title sounds weird but the facts I will be unfolding will be a sweet surprise for all of us. The popular bamboo that we widely see and use for our day to day activities is the next best alternative of plastics nd contribute immensely to save the Earth.

Bamboo is an evergreen flowering plant. They have the capacity to grow up to 36 inches in 24 hours. Although they look like trees, the bamboo plant is considered to be grass. Among thousands of species of plants all across the world, bamboo stand above the rest in terms of usefulness and speed of growth. There are more than 1000 species of the plant, each having its own distinctive feature.

We here at Namaste Bamboo have taken an initiative to widen the usefulness of bamboo into craft items made by our artisans. We act as a bridge between the buyers and the artisans. Bamboo is the foundation of our intention, helping us to promote two meaningful objectives:

1. To help the artisans lead a decent life and gain recognition from their craft.

2. To preach the environment-friendly nature of bamboo.

The strength of bamboo is similar to that of timber and equals to the tensile strength of steel. The plant has been in use for thousands of years. Earlier, houses and boats were made from bamboo due to its remarkable strength. So, we can stop giving excuses for ongoing timber plantation or cutting procedure and switch to the better alternative.

It is very important to underline the fact that due to the speedy growth of the bamboo, 20 to 30 bamboo are cut and used in the lifespan of one timber tree. This fact signifies that bamboo are better and efficient than timber and other trees.

Doesn’t it look good to see long, thick, green trees standing across the roads, in a park or even a jungle? We get so excited to see huge trees because we are deprived of seeing one due to extensive deforestation. Wouldn’t it be better to let the old timber rest and use the long and slim bamboo to cater to our needs?

A change does not require protests but a moment of thought which can change the meaning of our existence and activities at large. All we have to do is, think practically and naturally on it.

It is very natural to believe that the continuous usage of bamboo for the construction of goods will lead to soil erosion and deforestation. Well, it’s not true. The bamboo reaches its maturity period within 2 to 3 years. During this span of time, bamboo grasses reach a similar height of a 60 to 70-year-old timber with similar strength.

Also, they are self-propagators - that is they grow on their own after being cut. The bamboo are required to be cut in an appropriate way for them to grow back on their own. Instant growing back of the bamboo doesn’t leave the soil loose and thus restricts deforestation and soil erosion.

Talking about the increasing global warming in the world, the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere is increasing rapidly, leading to the decline of oxygen content. All plants consume carbon dioxide to produce oxygen, but bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than an average tree. Helping us breathe a little better. The best part is that bamboo is best grown in a tropical climate. Those living in a similar climate can plant a bamboo tree to breathe better and spread the word all along.

Also, plastics play a major role in depleting the environment. They not only destroy the marine world but also the land and air majorly.

  • Plastics are made out of fossil fuels and lead to the depletion of them.
  • They are not disposal and stays on the surface for hundreds of years leading to land pollution, creating difficulty in the growth of plants as it wraps us around the roots, preventing them to breathe.
  • If they are burnt, they emit harmful gases. In any which way, plastic will attack the environment.

Upon knowing some of the reasons for global warming, we humans can lend a helping hand in preserving the environment. Switching to bamboo is one of the many solutions because:

  • Bamboo strength to weight ratio is similar to timber
  • More than 20 bamboo can be cultivated as against one timber tree.
  • It does not require high maintenance.
  • They are anti-bacterial, hence we are not required to spray pesticides.
  • They are completely natural, without any chemical intervention.
  • They are an appropriate replacement of plastics.
  • It decreases the carbon content faster than other trees from the environment.
  • You can lend a big hand in allowing the artisan of your country to live and survive better.

We at Namaste Bamboo, manufacture a wide range of bamboo products and strongly strive for a change to save the Earth. We discovered the qualities bamboo possess and found out that it is the next best alternative of plastic. Let us all join hands and protect nature. Visit us to know more!
