Artisan and Us

Namaste Bamboo promotes the local artisans and small entrepreneurs by connecting them with buyers who are looking for something special, crafted with dignity and a human touch, and not something that’s machine-made or mass-produced, but born out of creativity and soul.

We live in a time driven by mass consumption, where increasing demand dictates the flow of mass-produced goods. But at the same time, it kills the very essence of the human spirit that’s been the heart of commerce for centuries. When you buy local handmade goods, you are bound to have an experience that is much more intimate and personalized. Not to mention, the heartfelt gratitude of simple artisan triumphs over the indifference of a global conglomerate.

That spirit and sentiment will always stay with us because it’s who we are as people. India has always celebrated the simple dignity of a human being, and we at Namaste Bamboo will do our bit to preserve the human values that have been the very foundation of our country and culture.

The Indian artisan has very limited access in terms of consumer reach or markets, at home or abroad. Our site is inhabited with a wide selection of products from every corner of the country, direct from the artisan, NGOs working closely with artisan groups or from enterprises that directly deploy artisans in the creation of their products.

This is a small initiative taken by Namaste Bamboo to connect you with the best handicraft items. Every item is made out of sheer hard work and dedication, all having unique designs and vibrant colors. The artisans make household items like kitchen accessories, jewellery boxes, wall hangings, etc. The artistic perfection of every item will leave you spellbound.

It’s all in the bamboo

Bamboo are evergreen flowering plants. They have the capacity to grow up to 36 inches in 24 hours. Although they look like trees, the bamboo plant is considered to be a grass. Among thousands of species of plants all across the world, bamboo stand above the rest in terms of usefulness and speed of growth. There are more than 1000 species of the plant, each having its own distinctive feature.

We here at Namaste Bamboo have taken an initiative to widen the usefulness of bamboo into craft items made by our artisans. We act as a bridge between the buyers and the artisans. Bamboo is the foundation of our intuitive helping us to promote two meaningful objectives:

  • To help the artisans lead a decent life and gain recognition from their craft.
  • To preach the environment-friendly nature of bamboo.

The strength of bamboo is similar to that of timber and equals to the tensile strength of steel. The plant has been in use for thousands of years. Earlier, houses and boats were made from bamboo due to its remarkable strength.

It is very natural to believe that the continuous usage of bamboo for the construction of goods will lead to soil erosion and deforestation. Well, this is not true. The bamboo reach their maturity period in just 2 years. In two years, bamboo reach a similar height of a 60 to 70-year-old timber with similar strength. Also, they are self-propagators - that is they grow on their own after being cut. The bamboo are required to be cut in an appropriate way for themto grow back. Instant growing back of the bamboo doesn’t leave the soil loose.

It is very important to underline the fact that due to the speedy growth of the bamboo, 20 to 30 bamboo are cut and used in the lifespan of one timber tree. This fact signifies that bamboo are better and efficient than timber and other trees.

Talking about the increasing global warming in the world, the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere is increasing greater than oxygen. All plants consume carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. But bamboo produce 35% more oxygen than an average tree. Helping us breathe a little better. The best part is, bamboo are best grown in a tropical climate. Those living in a similar climate can plant a bamboo tree to breathe better with fewer efforts.

Also, plastics play a major role in depleting the environment. They not only destroy the marine world but also the land. Plastics are made out of fossil fuels and emit harmful greenhouse gases. They are not disposal and stays on the surface for hundreds of years leading to land pollution. They also create difficulty in the growth of plants as it wraps us around the roots, preventing them to grow. If they are burnt, they emit harmful gases. In any which way, plastic will attack the environment.

Upon knowing some of the reasons for global warming, we humans can lend a helping hand in preserving the environment. Switching to bamboo is one of the many solutions because:

  • Bamboo strength to weight ratio is similar to timber
  • More than 20 bamboo can be cultivated as against one timber tree.
  • It does not require high maintenance.
  • They are anti-bacterial, hence we are not required to spray pesticides.
  • They are completely natural, without any chemical intervention.
  • They are an appropriate replacement of plastics.
  • It decreases the carbon content faster than other trees from the environment.
  • You can lend a big hand in allowing the artisan of your country to live and survive better.
